ASX Company News: Watpac Secures Adelaide Airport Contract

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

Watpac Limited’s (WTP) newly established South Australian Construction business is already gathering strong momentum in the local market, with the Company being awarded the Adelaide Airport Landside Infrastructure project. The contract, with a construction value of approximately $75 million, represents Watpac’s first building construction job in South Australia, where the Company has undertaken civil infrastructure projects for many years.

The works will comprise a five-level multi -deck car park which will provide direct access to the existing Adelaide Airport Terminal 1 via a pedestrian plaza space. It will be served by major access roads that incorporate the re-alignment of existing road infrastructure, and the construction of additional roads. The 2,000-space car park is expected to facilitate approximately 7,000 vehicle entries per day, and will include facilities for hire car operators and valet parking, as well as improved taxi, limousine and bus access. The project will also comprise significant architectural landscaping, paving, curved feature canopies and an impressive link bridge between the terminal and the car park.  Watpac’s Civil Infrastructure team will also be intimately involved, undertaking the road works component of the project.

Greg Kempton, Watpac Managing Director, said he was delighted Watpac had made such a strong entrance into the local construction market after recruiting local State Manager for Construction, Tim Tape, late last year. “Having only established our Construction division in South Australia in October 2010, we are very pleased to be awarded this significant job as our first construction project in this State,” Mr Kempton said. “The Adelaide Airport Landside Infrastructure project sets a high benchmark for our continued success in South Australia, and will ultimately be a positive contribution to the strategic growth strategy we have in place for our businesses in South Australia. “In addition to our local leadership team, this is the State where myself and our National General Managers of Construction and Civil & Mining originally hail from, so taking part in such a high-profile project, and one that is so important to the community, is particularly rewarding.

Watpac is an ASX-listed company specialising in construction, civil engineering and mining, specialty services (including refurbishments), and property development. It has offices in Brisbane, Townsville, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth.

ASX Company News: Watpac To Build One Central Park In Sydney

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

Watpac Limited’s (WTP) Construction division has been awarded the $350 million construction contract for the construction of the prestigious One Central Park residential development in Sydney for Frasers Property Australia.

One Central Park is the landmark first residential stage of the $2 billion ‘Central Park’ precinct in the Sydney suburb of Chippendale, at the western gateway to the CBD. Central Park will offer a new urban village comprised of apartments, retail, hospitality, and office space.

Watpac Construction will build One Central Park’s two residential towers and five-level retail podium as part of the precinct, which will also be a landmark development for ‘green’ design. One Central Park’s East tower will comprise 33 storeys, while the West tower will be 16 storeys high, encompassing a total of 623 residential units above a five-level retail and recreation podium.  The complex will also include a further five levels of basement car parking to cater for 1,230 vehicles. Extensive external hard and soft landscaping works are also to be delivered.

The two towers will feature extensive ‘vertical gardens’, creating an appearance of green living walls on the exterior of the buildings. A heliostat reflector system will see mirrors reflect sunlight in to the void space between the two towers and adjoining gardens. The development will aim to achieve 5 Star Green Star ratings for design and building under both the Multi Unit Residential v1 and Retail Centre v1 Green Building Council of Australia rating systems.

The cutting-edge project has attracted internationally renowned architects including Jean Nouvel, architect for One Central Park, and will encompass state-of-the-art environmental management and energy efficiency components during design and construction that will set new industry benchmarks.

Greg Kempton, Watpac Managing Director, said the Company was delighted to be awarded this unique development, which he said demonstrated the level of confidence the client had in Watpac’s capability to deliver world-class projects.

Watpac Construction Awarded Brisbane Translational Research Institute Project

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

Watpac Construction (WTP) has today been awarded the construction of the $195 million prestigious Translational Research Institute (TRI) on the Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH) site in Brisbane.

The Translational Research Institute will be a first for Australia. The 32,000 square metre building will be one of the southern hemisphere’s largest facilities of its kind, and one of only a few places in the world where new biopharmaceuticals and treatments can be discovered, produced, clinically tested, and manufactured in one location that is not for the benefit of a single commercial entity. The seven-storey building comprises four floors of laboratory research space plus space for research support facilities, administration and teaching. A bio- pharmaceutical manufacturing facility will be constructed adjacent to the main TRI building.

The TRI will combine the strengths of Queensland’s leading translational researchers from the Princess Alexandra Hospital, the University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology, the Mater Medical Research Institute and the Queensland Government and will house more than 600 researchers. Located at Queensland’s second largest hospital, it will combine academic medicine and translational research, in order to minimise the time between a laboratory discovery and its effective application in the clinic and the community.

Watpac Managing Director, Greg Kempton said Watpac was extremely pleased to be awarded the contract for the TRI building. The award reflected Watpac’s strength in delivering complex and high quality research institutes. “As a company with strong roots in Queensland we are delighted to be able to participate in this high-profile project which will directly benefit Queensland and Australia. The benefits of this project are two-fold – through the immediate provision of jobs to the local community and the Australian researchers – and the long term benefits of having such an important facility based in Australia,” said Mr Kempton. “Through our immediate experience on similar large laboratory complexes Watpac will bring to the project the most current and relevant technical knowledge and a skilled team who will ensure the construction of the TRI building is a success,” said Mr Kempton.

The Translational Research Institute is set to open in 2012, with the Bio Pharmaceuticals Australia facility said to commence manufacturing by 2013.

Watpac Awarded $200 million Of New Projects

Monday, July 27th, 2009

Watpac’s Queensland Construction (WTP) division is celebrating the award of almost $200 million worth of projects in recent weeks. The majority of the work won was sizable projects for the Commonwealth Department of Defence in both Townsville and Brisbane. In Townsville, the team was awarded the Enhanced Land Force Stage 1, New Facilities for the Third Battalion the Royal Australian Regiment (3 RAR) and Messing Facilities project for Defence. This project is a lump sum Head Contract and involves the refurbishment and extension of some existing facilities and the construction of new facilities at Lavarack Barracks to be completed for the relocated 3 RAR. Works will include extensive civil works, refurbishment and extension of messing facilities, the construction of new buildings for use as headquarters, administrative support, quartermaster stores, and platoon and training facilities. In Brisbane, Watpac is soon to begin work on the RAAF Base Amberley Redevelopment Stage 3, Package 6—Passive Defence Augmentation and Demolitions project. The works comprise an extensive security upgrade to the Base and involves new high- level security fencing around the perimeter of the Base, extensive civil works, demolition, and the construction of new gate houses.

Martin Monro, Watpac Construction National General Manager, said the new Defence projects are recognition of Watpac’s ability to win work that is not awarded solely on price but on the strength of Watpac’s teams, and its safety, environmental and quality systems. “These projects throughout Queensland show Watpac has the skills and experience to undertake a wide variety of work,” Mr Monro said. “As a Queensland-born company, it is particularly heartening to see that many of these projects will not only provide new and updated facilities for our Defence personnel, but will also create jobs for Queenslanders.”

In addition to the Defence projects, this week Watpac was named as one of the managing contractors for Round 2 of the $600 million Australian Government’s National Building Programme—Primary Schools for the 21 Century. Other projects secured in the last month include Albion Park Demolition and Services Work, the Brisbane Cricket Ground Roof Reinstallation, and the Coopers Plains OHSS Complex W8 project.

Other Watpac Construction projects currently underway in Queensland include the Nambour Hospital redevelopment on the Sunshine Coast, the Knowledge Based Research Centre and Boggo Road Urban Village projects in Brisbane, and the Australian Tropical Science and Innovation Precinct at James Cook University in Townsville. In other states, the Construction Division has continued to secure work, with other recent wins including the Woolworths Data Centre in Sydney, the Cochlear Global Headquarters building at Macquarie University, and the RMIT University Design Hub project in Melbourne.
