ASX Company News: Viralytics Granted US Cancer Treatment Patent

Monday, November 28th, 2011

Viralytics Ltd (VLA) is pleased to announce the granting of a notice of allowance by the United States Patent and Trademark Office for issuance of a patent covering a Coxsackie A virus capable of infecting cancer cells substantially in the absence of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1).  Dr Darren Shafren, Viralytics Chief Scientific Officer said “CAVATAK  targets and destroys cancerous cells following binding to surface expressed ICAM-1. The generation of this novel Coxsackie A virus, that can infect cancer cells in the absence of ICAM-1 expands the range of cancers that Viralytics panel of oncolytic viruses can potentially target”.

The scope of the allowed claims of US 10/592,395 covers a bio-selected form of Coxsackievirus A21 which was generated following passage in cells not expressing ICAM-1 but expressing decay accelerating factor (DAF). Decay accelerating factor expression is up-regulated on the surface of many cancerous cells including ovarian, colo-rectal and gastric cancers, making it a target for the newly bio-selected Coxsackievirus A21. The allowed claims also cover specific changes induced on the surface of the Coxsackievirus A21 during the bio-selection process on DAF-expressing cancer cells that are believed to confer the extended scope of cancer cell targeting.

ASX Company News: Viralytics Granted Chinese Patent

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

Viralytics Limited (VLA) is pleased to announce the receipt of Chinese notice to grant a patent involving of the use of CAVATAK TM RNA as an anti-cancer agent in human melanoma. The scope of this application involves, the delivery of viral RNA extracted directly from CAVATAKTM or synthetically manufactured RNA, to human melanoma cells to initiate an oncolytic viral infection and cell death. Existing patents granted to Viralytics involve the use of live whole virus while this new application involves the use of only the viral RNA “genetic blueprints” extracted from within the CAVATAKTM particle. The viral RNA may be delivered alone or in combination with an appropriate lipid formulation. The treatment regime offers a potential alternate strategy in producing oncolytic infection in human melanoma cells compared to the delivery of purified CAVATAKTM particles, which is currently under Phase I clinical evaluation in patients with late stage melanoma, breast, prostate and head/neck cancer.

Viralytics (VLA) principal asset is the intellectual property relating to CAVATAKTM, an Oncolytic Virus technology. CAVATAKTM is the trade name for Viralytics proprietary formulation of the Coxsackievirus Type A21 (CVA21). CVA21 is a human virus that occurs naturally in the community. CVA21 has been associated with upper respiratory infection ( “cold” like symptoms) and is self limiting, requiring no specific treatment for those infected to completely recover. In order to infect a cell, CVA21 must first attach to the outside of a cell, using a specific receptor on the cell’s surface (like a key fitting a lock). CVA21 uses two receptors to infect cells, intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and/or decay accelerating factor (DAF). Both of these receptor proteins have been demonstrated to be highly expressed on multiple cancer types, including: melanoma, prostate cancer, breast cancer, multiple myeloma and others.

Viralytics Granted Australian Patent For Cancer Cure

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Viralytics Limited (VLA) is pleased to announce that it has been granted an Australian patent covering the use of Echoviruses for the treatment of all cancers bearing expression of the integrin α2β1. This patent also covers the right to use EVATAKTM (The trademarked name of Viralytics’ proprietary formulation of the Echovirus Type 1) in conjunction with other oncolytic viruses such as the Company’s lead product CAVATAKTM. The Company has received granted patents for this family of viruses from the USA, India, South Africa and Singapore.

Professor Darren Shafren (Chief Scientist Officer and inventor of the technology) said, “Numerous cancers, in particular OVARIAN AND GASTRIC CANCERS, have elevated surface levels of integrin α2β1. The presence of integrin α2β1 allows our family of echoviruses to lock onto the surface of cancer cells, leading to rapid infection and cellular destruction.” This is a similar process to the company’s lead candidate CAVATAKTM which uses an ICAM-1 receptor instead of the integrin α2β1 to lock onto the surface of cancer cells”.

Viralytics is listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (VLA). Its principal asset is the intellectual property relating to CAVATAKTM, an Oncolytic Virus technology. CAVATAKTM is the trade name for Viralytics’ proprietary formulation of the Coxsackievirus Type A21 (CVA21). CVA21 is a virus that occurs naturally in the community. CVA21 attaches to the outside of a cell, using a specific ‘receptor’ on the cell’s surface (like a key fitting a lock). CVA21 uses two receptors to infect cells, intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and/or decay accelerating factor (DAF). Viralytics Secures Cancer Treatment Patent

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Viralytics Limited (VLA) has been granted a key patent by US authorities covering the use of Echoviruses for the treatment of all cancers expressing the integrin a2b1 molecule. EVATAK™ is the trade name for Viralytics’ proprietary formulation of the Echovirus Type 1. EV1 attach to the outside of cells, using a specific ‘receptor’ on the cell’s surface (like a key fitting a lock). EV1 uses the receptor, integrin a2b1 to bind and infect target cells. Types of cancer cells that express high levels of the integrin a2b1 molecule on their surface include ovarian, prostate and gastric cancers. Professor Darren Shafren (Chief Scientific Officer and inventor of the technology) said, “The granting of this US patent significantly increases Viralytics’ intellectual property portfolio, which already includes both US and European patents for a subset of Coxsackie A group viruses including CAVATAKTM, our lead product.”
