VDM Group Limited (VMG) is pleased to announce that VDM Contracting, in a 50-50 Joint Venture with NRW Civil and Mining (NWH) has been awarded the Sino Iron Project Port Area Bulk Earthways. The contract, which has an estimated value of $240 million, is part of the major infrastructure requirements for the project. The mine has over 2 billion tonnes of magnetic resource and plans to export 27 billion tones every year. The contract involves drilling, blasting and evacuation of over 6.5 million cubic meters of rock. Of this, 2.5 million cubic meters will be used in fill and pavement materials of the bulk earthways and 4 million cubic meters in the construction of a 3.6 km long breakwater. VDM Contracting’s responsibilities in the joint venture are for the processing of all breakwater rock and manufactured fill, and the construction of breakwater. Site works are scheduled to commence in May 2009 and run for approximately 15 months, with site based personnel peaking to close to 500.
