In the Engine Room – Charting Tools in The Bourse

    Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

The Bourse is a comprehensive, fully customisable, easy to navigate charting software program that can assist in the financial management of your shares portfolio, it provides you with a diverse range of chart types for displaying security price data. Plain charts display exact price activity without any modifications to the data.

To apply indicators and or line studies to a chart, the Bourse uses a simple set of menus. The main drawing tools are contained within the standard toolbar (at the top of the chart below) and the indicators can be accessed from the IND button (below the standard toolbar) or the Indicators Toolbar (shown on the right hand side of the chart below).

If the Indicator Toolbar is not displayed you can display it with a click on Tools, then Toolbars and make sure there is a tick next to Indicators.

    Add Line Studies

Line studies are available on the standard toolbar.

    1. To apply any of the line studies click on the study you wish to use and then move your arrow onto the chart.

    2. The study will display the appropriate prompt.

    3. Either click where you want the line (horizontal lines) or hold down the left mouse button at the start of the line and drag it to where you want to finish. When you release the line will be drawn.

    4. For a parallel line, click where you want the parallel line to be placed.

    5. When you have finished drawing make sure you click on the arrow symbol to exit drawing mode.

In addition to standard lines available in the Bourse there is also the Gann Angles, Retracement Tools and Fibonacci Lines available from this toolbar. You can also add text or ellipses to highlight certain aspects of the chart.

    Edit Line Studies

You can delete lines using the eraser tool also located on the standard toolbar. You have options to Erase, Erase All, Extend or move the lines you have drawn. Click on the button for the action you want to perform and move your arrow onto the chart. From here you can make the changes by clicking on the line or dragging it to the new location.

    Add Indicators

Once you have indicators on a chart, you can add and remove individual ones very easily.

To add a new indicator use the IND button on the chart tool bar or right-click menu and add your new indicator.

    1. Select the indicator you wish to use from the menu on the left in the display window.

    2. Click Add, and then adjust the parameters to the values that you wish to use.

    3. Click OK to apply the indicator.

If you choose to use the indicator toolbar it automatically preloads your chosen indicator. All you have to do is edit the parameters and click OK to apply indicator.

    Edit Indicators

To delete indicators from a chart follow this procedure:

The following chart has quite an elaborate spread of indicators. Notice how they are in two sections of the chart, some being on or around the chart bars and the others under the chart bars.

To delete chart elements that are on or around the chart bars such as Moving Averages and Bollinger Bands:

    1. Right click on the top section of the chart (that is on or around the indicator that you wish to delete),

    2. Select the Edit graph menu item.

    3. Select the indicator that you wish to delete and click on the Delete button.

    4. Once you are finished click on the Done button.

To delete chart elements which are below the chart bars such as RSI, Volume and CStats:

    1. Right click on the lower section of the chart, on or around the indicator that you wish to delete.

    2. Select the Delete Graph# item. This will delete the indicator identified by the number (#).

    3. Here is the result screen after having removed a few indicators.

Using these simple tools in The Bourse allows you to complete your analysis of the price action and clearly define your entry and exit points.
