New Features in Rapid Trader

Friday, May 13th, 2011

In recent months the software development team has been working hard to improve the Rapid Trader online trading platform, adding even more functionality and usability enhancements. This latest release includes an upgraded menu, the addition of customisable search preferences, and, most importantly, the ability to trade Options. All of these are designed to assist you with executing your trades even more quickly and efficiently.

Navigation is available from the left hand menu. Choose from the following menu options:
Home, News, Watchlist, Options Monitor, Portfolio, Top Companies, Fundamental Data or Quick Quote.

This menu can be expanded or hidden away:

*Click << to collapse the menu or *Click >> to expand it.

Rapid Trader Menu

When the menu is collapsed you can click on the grey bar on the left hand side of the window to temporarily display the menu. The menu will pop out so you can select what you wish to view, and it will disappear again when you move the mouse off the menu. To display the menu permanently click the >> button to expand it.

Settings

Accessible from a link in the top right hand corner, the Settings tool allows you to customise Rapid Trader to better meet your needs. You can choose from One Click or Two Click Trading for your order placement, which will determine whether you need to confirm your trade before it gets placed, or if you want your orders sent directly to the market. Now you can also specify the types of instruments that are displayed when you are searching for the share you want.

Rapid Trader - Settings

* Click the Settings link
* Click the Trading Preferences tab
* Select the style of trading you prefer
* Click OK

When you type a symbol in any of the search boxes Rapid Trader automatically provides a list of possible securities. If you only want to see shares then in the Search Preferences tab select the Equities box only. If you would like to see other choices then select the appropriate boxes, you can choose as many or as few as you wish. The more options you select the bigger the list you have to choose from when typing in a symbol.

Options Monitor

The Options Monitor enables you to view the current prices for Exchange Traded Options and when you find the option you are looking for you can quickly execute your trade.

Rapid Trader - Options Monitor

* If your side menu is expanded, click << to collapse the menu. This is not essential, but will give you more space to view your data.
* Enter the symbol of the underlying share, eg BHP.ASX.
* Select the expiry month.
* Select the type of option (Call, Put or both).
* Click Request to display the latest prices.

With the option prices displayed you can select the option you are interested in and click the Buy or Sell buttons located at the top right of your screen.

* Enter the price you wish to pay – note this is a limit price.
* Enter the quantity you wish to buy.
* Click the Buy button.

Your option order will be executed when your price conditions have been met.

Make sure you check out the new features available in Rapid Trader and use these to enhance your trading execution. All orders are executed through Trader Dealer where you can trade from as little as $19.50 per trade.

Behind the scenes in the IT lab

At an online share trading company, the IT department is always one of the busiest, and the last couple of months have been no exception. Our main focus has been on our new online trading platform Rapid Trader and we are happy to announce it now features a streaming course of trade in the Market Depth view.

Something exciting that hasn’t been released from the lab yet is the streaming charts function for Rapid Trader. Just like the rest of Rapid Trader, the new charts update in real time as trades take place. We’re including support for intervals from Monthly down to Ticked based. This function is currently receiving some modifications to ensure it’s fully supported by our systems. For our beta testers, you will be able to see this as an extra tab in the chart area, when we have the feature turned on. The actual release date is still to be finalised so look out for our announcements later in the year.

At Trader Dealer we also understand the importance of information, so we have developed an application enabling you to take advantage of the wealth of data that is available. For those of you without Rapid Trader, you can use our handy company information finder on our website to get key fundamental data about any company listed on the ASX. Just enter the stock code or the name of the company you are interested in for ASX share price information, company size, research analyst forecasts, share and financial ratios, as well as business and financial summaries.

Other tasks we’re working on at the moment include internal updates to our websites. You will already have seen the Trader Dealer website which was launched a few months ago, and we are currently redeveloping a number of other group websites so keep an eye out for these changes.

We are always developing new products, but behind the scenes there are many other jobs that require ongoing support to internal functions. My appreciation goes out to everyone within the “nerd” department for their continued hard work.

There will be many updates and improvements going forward as we grow and strive to bring you the best but for now that’s it from me!

FAQs

Which brokerage rate will give me the best value for money?

At Trader dealer we’ve designed a brokerage schedule to make sure you get fantastic value for your money, no matter how much you trade.

You can choose from our standard $19.50 brokerage rate for trades up to $18,000, or our  ProTrader rate for those who trade in larger amounts. With the ProTrader rate you can trade up to $200,000 per confirmation for just $33.

On both rates you can squeeze more value from your brokerage by splitting your orders throughout the day, giving traders like yourself greater savings.

For those of you not familiar with splitting orders, this is a very simple and cost effective way of trading that gives you the opportunity to spread your orders throughout the day and get the best possible prices. With Trader Dealer you can buy or sell one share up to 12 different times per day and only be charged for one confirmation. This means you only pay one brokerage fee when most brokers will charge you on a per order basis. You can read more about how you can split your orders through Trader Dealer on our website.

For more information and to set up a Trader Dealer account please call us on 1300 853 856.

Word from the Nerd- New Features in Rapid Trader

Friday, March 26th, 2010

The Rapid Trader development team has been hard at work. Rapid Trader has a new release due out early next week.

The two main updates are the addition of Top Companies and Fundamental Data information.

The Top Companies section includes near real-time calculations on the top twenty ASX securities based on a range of criteria, including:

• Net Gainers
• Net Losers
• Percent Gainers
• Percent Losers
• Top Volume
• Top Turnover

You can filter the results to show the entire ASX market, just shares or just warrants. The calculations are run every thirty seconds and are automatically updated on your screen. Just like in the watchlists, the actual quote data is streaming.

RTTopCompanies

The Fundamental Page lists general fundamental information for each security.

RTFundamentalData

This includes a business summary, a number of ratios and collated analyst research information, such as recommendations on buy/hold/sell.

These updates are a valuable addition to Rapid Trader’s features,  set to enhance your online trading experience. But we’re still just getting started – the next round of updates will include course of trade details in the Market Depth and potentially a real-time chart. Both features are something you have been asking for, and we’ve been looking forward to releasing for some time.

I once again must express my appreciation of the IT teams we have working for us. Our goal has been to drive the next generation in online trading software and they have been working hard to deliver this.

As always if you have any suggestions or recommendations on Rapid Trader please feel free to e-mail us at info@traderdealer.com.au

Well that’s it for me until next time!

Portmans drags down Premier’s profits

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Premier Investments released some disappointing first-half results today, dragged down by a poor showing from Portmans.

Portmans is one of several retail outlets under Premier’s Just Group division, along with Just Jeans, Jacqui E, Jay Jays, Dottie and Smiggle.

Premier’s first-half net profit fell 14% to $42.4 million. Nevertheless, total sales from the Just Group division were up, and an interim dividend of 38 cents has been declared, up from 37 cents last year.

The Premier share price has opened slightly down from its impressive Friday close of $9.01.

In the Engine Room – Rapid Trader Home Page

Friday, March 19th, 2010

Rapid Trader Home Page

Rapid Trader is the latest trading platform release from Trader Dealer Online and provides you with quick execution of your trades. Trades can be executed from anywhere within the Rapid Trader platform, with the Home Page allowing you to follow the price of a wide variety of different shares of interest. Today we will show you how to use this page to get the most from your trading.

The Home Page can be customised to show your favourite shares so that you can follow the price movement. The price of the share is displayed in its own price window or “Quote Widget” as it is called. This Quote Widget not only provides the Last, Bid and Ask prices for the share, it also provides the ability to trade and to request Market Depth and Charts by pressing the “Broadcast” button.

ITER Image 1

Add, Change and Remove a Quote Widget

To add a quote widget

- Click + above “Add Widget”

- Type in the ASX code of the security you would like to view, followed by .ASX, e.g. BHP.ASX (Rapid Trader will provide suggestions of possible shares as you type).

- Select the share from the list or press Enter to select the share Rapid Trader has highlighted.

- Then press Enter (or click OK).

You can add more Quote Widgets on your screen to watch multiple shares at the same time and rearrange them as you wish by dragging the Widgets.

ITER Image 2

To delete a Quote Widget

You can close a Widget with a click on X in the top right hand corner or you can minimise the Widget with a click on the ^ button.

To change the symbol on a Quote Widget

- Click “Change Symbol” located between the close (X) and the minimise (^) buttons on a Quote Widget.

The Widgets that you leave displayed on the Home Page will be available next time you log into Rapid Trader.

Market Depth

The Market Depth window is displayed in the bottom left of the Home Page, while a basic chart is displayed on the bottom right. Market Depth provides the buyers and sellers at different prices for the security as well as the full details regarding the open, high, low, volume and change in the shares price for the day.

ITER Image 3

To view the Market Depth for any share there is a Broadcast (BR) button between the Buy and Sell buttons on your Quote Widget. When you click this button the Market Depth will be displayed for this share.

The Broadcast button is also available on the “Quick Quote” screen and becomes available when you select a valid share.

Charts

At the same time as you broadcast a stock quote to view Market Depth, you can also view the chart for the same share located in the bottom right of the Home Page. To view the chart of a different share, click the Broadcast button for that share on the Quote Widget.

ITER Image 4

Once the data has been broadcast to the chart you can then change the time period you view by selecting the tab for Daily, Weekly or 5 Minute.

You can also resize the charts. To do this place your cursor on the dividing line until the < || > symbol displays. When this symbol is visible you can then hold down the left mouse button and drag the window to the size you want it. As you do this the data in the window will adjust to fit the new space. This way you can make the chart bigger or smaller.

So make the most of these tips to maximise your opportunities when using Rapid Trader!

Word from the Nerd – ASX monopoly under threat

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Interesting times are ahead of us with the Federal Government encouraging new entrants to break the monopoly that the ASX has in the Australian Equity Markets and allow further rival Stock Markets into Australia.

The ASX can see the writing on the wall with their own announcement on the upcoming upgrade to their technology.

Historically, the ASX used a technology called SEATS that our systems would connect to for market data. A number of years ago, they switched across to ITS. With the above announcement, they’re now moving a third time to something called Genium INET. We’ll be looking at this new technology in the coming months to review what changes we need to make internally, but the structure of our Market Data System should mean that the change is minimal.

What’s more exciting is that if the competitive markets are introduced, then our Market Data System should again easily support both quote data from those markets and also execution to them giving more options to our members.

Rapid Trader, the first of our products to use our new Market Data System, has been out in the wild now for a month. The uptake of users on this system is encouraging to see. We’re now hard at work on adding some additional features to the product, whilst continuing our work on our existing products being moved across to the new system.

We’re also interested in publishing the programming interface for our Market Data System for clients to use with their own software and programming. If this is something that you might be interested, then please e-mail me with the address craig.foley@mdsfinancial.com.au.
