  • ASX Company News: Living Cell Technologies Granted European Patent

    Living Cell Technologies Limited (LCT)  received formal notification that it has been granted E.U. Patent No. 1,438,395 from the European Patent Office (EPO). The patent protects the ability to culture two different types of cells derived from Auckland Island pigs, therefore enabling the assembly and maintenance of a mix of cells or artificial tissue in culture for xenotransplantation therapies.

    Professor Bob Elliott, LCT’s Medical Director said, “Whilst we have successfully taken single cell animal transplant treatments into the clinic, a number of chronic disease states could benefit from transplantation of a mix of cells or artificial tissue that work together to ensure survival and appropriate function.”

    The patent will be assigned to Diatranz Otsuka Limited (DOL), a joint venture company established by LCT and Otsuka Pharmaceutical Factory, Inc. to commercialise xenotransplantation for the treatment of Type 1 diabetes. LCT has a 50 per cent shareholding in DOL, and a service agreement to supply research and development and administrative services to the joint venture. Under the Services and Products agreement, DOL will supply pig cells to LCT for use in developing new xenotransplantation treatments in non-diabetes related disease areas, including neurodegenerative disorders.

    Living Cell Technologies (LCT) is developing cell-based products to treat life threatening human diseases. The Company holds 50% of Diatranz Otsuka Limited which owns a bio- certified pig herd that it uses as a source of cells and DIABECELL® which is designed to help normalise the lives of people with unstable Type 1 diabetes, especially those suffering from life-threatening episodes of unaware hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), a dangerous and potentially fatal diabetes complication. Using breakthrough proprietary microencapsulation technology, IMMUPELTM, which enables implantation of cell-based therapeutics without immunosuppression, LCT is developing NTCELL, a choroid plexus cell product which is currently in preclinical development to treat neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, stroke, and hearing loss. LCT also offers medical-grade porcine-derived products for the repair and replacement of damaged tissues, as well as for research and other purposes.

    ASX Company News: Viralytics Granted Cancer Virus Patent

    Viralytics Limited (VLA) is pleased to announce the granting of a patent by the United States Patent and Trademark Office covering a Coxsackie A virus capable of infecting cancer cells substantially in the absence of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1).

    Dr Darren Shafren, Viralytics Chief Scientific Officer said “CAVATAKTM targets and destroys cancerous cells following binding to surface expressed ICAM-1. The generation of this novel Coxsackie A virus, that can infect cancer cells in the absence of ICAM-1 expands the range of cancers that Viralytics panel of oncolytic viruses can potentially target”.

    The scope of the allowed claims of Patent No. 8,114,416 covers a bio- selected form of Coxsackievirus A21 which was generated following passage in cells not expressing ICAM-1 but expressing decay accelerating factor  (DAF). Decay accelerating factor expression is up-regulated on the surface of many cancerous cells including ovarian, colorectal and gastric cancers,

    making it a target for the newly bio-selected Coxsackievirus A21. Claims of the patent also cover specific changes induced on the surface of the Coxsackievirus A21 during the bio-selection process on DAF-expressing cancer cells that are believed to confer the extended scope of cancer cell targeting.

    Viralytics’ principal asset is the intellectual property relating to CAVATAKTM, an Oncolytic Virus technology. CAVATAKTM is the trade name for Viralytics’ proprietary formulation of the Coxsackievirus Type A21 (CVA21). EVATAKTM is the trade name for Viralytics’ proprietary formulation of the Echovirus Type 1 (EV1). CVA21 and EV1 are viruses that occur naturally in the community. CVA21 and EV1 attach to the outside of cells, using a specific ‘receptor’ on the cell’s surface (like a key fitting a lock). CVA21 uses the receptors, intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and/or decay accelerating factor (DAF) to bind and infect target cells. Both of these receptor proteins have been demonstrated to be highly expressed on multiple cancer types, including: melanoma, prostate cancer, breast cancer, multiple myeloma and others. EV1 uses the receptor, integrin α2β1 to bind and infect target cells. Integrin α2β1 has been demonstrated to be highly expressed on multiple cancer types, including: prostate cancer, ovarian cancer and others.

    ASX Company News: Novogen Secures Cancer Treatment Patent

    Novogen (NRT) subsidiary, Marshall Edwards, Inc., an oncology company focused on the clinical development of novel therapeutics targeting cancer metabolism, announced today that the US Patent and Trademark Office has issued a new patent covering a number of the company’s isoflavone-based compounds, including lead oncology drug candidates ME-143 and ME-344, and their pharmaceutical compositions. The patent is estimated to provide protection until March 2027.

    Marshall Edwards completed the acquisition of its isoflavone-based intellectual property portfolio, including worldwide rights to lead oncology drug candidates ME-143 and ME-344, from Novogen Limited in May 2011. The portfolio now includes 11 issued US patents, at least 14 US patent applications, at least 40 issued foreign patents and at least 80 foreign patent applications. Marshall Edwards, Inc. is a San Diego-based oncology company focused on the clinical development of novel anti-cancer therapeutics. The company’s lead programs focus on two families of small molecules that result in the inhibition of tumour cell metabolism. Novogen Limited (NRT) is an Australian biotechnology company based in Sydney, Australia.     ASX Company News: Anteo Diagnostics Granted Japanese Patent

    Anteo Diagnostics Limited (ADO) announced that the Japanese Patent Office has granted the “Use of Metal Complexes” patent for Mix&GoTM. It is unusual that patents are granted in Japan as quickly as this. Its granting provides Anteo with further confidence in the quality of the science and security over the intellectual property (IP) in a commercially large jurisdiction.

    There are many commercially important reasons to bind biological molecules onto synthetic materials. These molecules are often fragile and do not react well when exposed to non-biological conditions. Mix&GoTM has been demonstrated to allow them to retain their activity when bound. The “Use of Metal Complexes” patent covers the IP for the use of Mix&GoTM to facilitate this important binding process. Anteo has demonstrated that the benefits of Mix&GoTM over existing methods are both numerous and significant from technical and commercial perspectives. Further, the Mix&GoTM technology has broad applications in non-biological markets. This is another important patent to be granted to Anteo in a key market and marks another critical step in the continued effort to strengthen the IP of the Mix&GoTM technology.

    ASX Company News: Prana Biotechnology Granted Parkinson’s Disease Patent

    Prana Biotechnology (PBT) announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has issued a Notice of Allowance for a composition of matter patent for selected 8-hydroxy quinazolinone compounds, including its lead Parkinson’s Disease(PD) drug candidate, PBT434, in the United States. The patent entitled ‘Neurologically Active Compounds’ also covers pharmaceutical compositions containing PBT434 andselected 8-hydroxy quinazolinone compounds.  Once granted, the United States patent has a twenty year term expiring June 7, 2026.  This expiry date may in the future be further extended by the application of pharmaceutical extension of term provisions of up to five years in the United States.

    Geoffrey Kempler, Prana’s CEO, said “securing granted rights to our lead PD drug candidate furthers our commercialization plans for PBT434 for which Prana was recently awarded a grant from The Michael J. Fox Foundation to undertake preclinical development studies to enable human clinical trials”.

    Prana Biotechnology was established to commercialise research into Alzheimer’s Disease and other major age-related neurodegenerative disorders. The Company was incorporated in 1997 and listed on the Australian Securities Exchange in March 2000 and listed on NASDAQ in September 2002.     ASX Company News: Clinuvel Pharmaceuticals Granted Patent

    Clinuvel Pharmaceuticals Limited (CUV) announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has granted Clinuvel pivotal patent protection for the delivery of melanocortins as photoprotective agents in transdermal formulations. Clinuvel has two melanocortin drugs in development (afamelanotide and CUV9900), both of which are analogues of the naturally occurring hormone alpha-Melanocyte Stimulating Hormone (alpha-MSH). Patent 20110263508 grants Clinuvel exclusive rights for compositions of alpha-MSH analogues and transdermal delivery systems and methods of inducing melanogenesis by topical administration.

This patent will allow the company a further extension of the use of afamelanotide and CUV9900 in non-invasive formulations.     ASX Company News: Benitec Expands European RNA Patents

    The Directors of Benitec Ltd (BLT), a world leader in RNA- based gene silencing for human therapeutics, are pleased to announce that further significant progress has been made in its global patent estate. In Europe, the European Patent Office has issued a certificate of grant on one of Benitec and CSIRO’s key platform patents in the “Graham” patent family, entitled Control of Gene Expression.

    “Europe is a major strategic jurisdiction for human therapeutics, and it is very pleasing to add this patent to Benitec’s already extensive portfolio which already includes patents in all other key jurisdictions”, said Dr Peter French, Benitec’s Chief Executive Officer. He went on to say, “The grant of the EP patent represents further significant validation of this technology in key markets”. The patent, which is owned by CSIRO and for which Benitec is the exclusive licensee in the human therapeutics field, includes claims to a synthetic gene which can reduce the expression of a target gene. The synthetic gene comprises multiple copies of a nucleotide sequence of greater than 20 nucleotides, which is substantially identical to the nucleotide sequence of a target gene. In the United States, three further patent applications have been allowed or granted which complement Benitec’s existing focus on hepatitis viral therapies.

    These patents derive from applications in the Graham patent family for which Benitec is the exclusive licensee in the human therapeutics field. Grant of these patents by the USPTO underlines Benitec’s exclusive position in this foundational patent family for expressed RNAi as human therapeutics. This technology, which was originally developed with researchers at Stanford University, represents an important tool for silencing genes in the liver, such as in treatment of viral hepatitis.

    Benitec Limited is developing novel treatments for chronic and life-threatening conditions based on gene silencing using a transformational technology; DNA-directed RNA interference (ddRNAi) – sometimes called expressed RNAi. The technology’s potential to address unmet medical needs and to cure disease results from its demonstrated ability to permanently silence genes which cause the condition. Benitec now either owns or exclusively licences from CSIRO more than 40 granted or allowed patents in the field of RNA interference for human therapeutic applications.     ASX Company News: Antisense Therapeutics Granted Japanese Patent

    Antisense Therapeutics (ANP) is pleased to report the granting of Japanese patent No. 4753863 which covers the Company’s second generation antisense drug ATL1101 that targets the insulin-like growth factor I receptor (IGF-1R) and has potential applications in the treatment of cancer. At the same time, the Company also advises that it has received a Notice of Allowance on ATL1101 Canadian patent application 2515484 which will proceed to grant in the coming months. Both the Japanese and Canadian patents are entitled “Modulation of Insulin Like Growth Factor I Receptor Expression” and protect the use of ATL1101 until 2024. The Japanese and Canadian patents form part of the extensive portfolio of intellectual property protecting ATL1101 and its applications in the treatment of cancer. The Intellectual Property that is in place to support the successful development and commercialization of ATL1101 is an integral part of the value created by the Company.
