Circadian Technologies Receives Japanese Patent

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

Circadian Technologies Limited (CIR) announced today that its 100% owned subsidiary company, Vegenics Limited, has been granted Japanese Patent 4324709 claiming the VEGF-C protein, VEGF-C gene and antibodies to VEGF-C as well as the use of these molecules in a broad spectrum of therapeutic indications, including the treatment of cancer. VEGF-C, a major novel target for cancer and other diseases, is closely related to VEGF-A, the target of Genentech’s Avastin , a leading cancer therapy with annual worldwide sales in excess of ® US$7.5 billion. This Japanese patent together with the large number of VEGF-C patents granted in the United States and Europe provides Circadian with a major commercial advantage and access to the world’s major pharmaceutical markets. Japan is the world’s second largest market for pharmaceuticals after the USA comprising around 11%.

“Stemming from the enormous success of Avastin , the development of antibody drugs targeting ® angiogenic molecules such as VEGF-C is widely considered one of the most promising strategies in the pharmaceutical industry,” commented Circadian CEO, Mr Robert Klupacs. This patent adds to our considerable estate of intellectual property covering VEGF family members. It is an important protection for our internal therapeutics development programs and represents a major asset for commercial partnerships with other companies seeking to pursue this approach.”

Circadian (CIR) is a biologics drug developer utilising the significant intellectual property portfolio around Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) C and D that it has accumulated in its unlisted wholly owned subsidiary Vegenics. The applications for the VEGF technology, which functions in regulating blood supply, are substantial and broad. Circadian’s internal product development programs are focussed on novel anti-cancer therapeutics for large unmet needs.

Medical Therapies Secures European Atherosclerosis Patent

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Medical Therapies Limited (MTY) has been granted an important European patent titled “Pharmaceutical compositions for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis and restenosis after PTCA”.

Atherosclerosis, or narrowing of the blood vessels, can lead to heart attack, stroke and vascular diseases which result in 50,000 deaths in Australia annually. These conditions are the most common causes of serious illness and death worldwide, especially in developed countries. A preventative or treatment as outlined in MTY’s now granted patent represents a large global market opportunity.

MTY’s business model relies on building long term revenue from licensing its intellectual property. The Company owns 26 patent families and over 50 granted patents around midkine. This new patent adds significant value to the company’s asset portfolio and creates a major licensing opportunity.

Atherosclerosis is the leading cause of stroke, heart attack and vascular diseases throughout the world. It is characterised by the narrowing and thickening of the blood vessels due to the build up fatty material, such as cholesterol. Narrowing of the blood vessels is often treated with angioplasty (PCTA). However rapid rebuilding of plaques, also known as restenosis, limits the long term benefits of angioplasty. The current patent relates to the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis and restenosis following angioplasty using MTY’s proprietary compositions.

Senetas Granted Patent For Network Encryption

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Senetas Corporation Limited (SEN) announced today that it has been granted an Australian Patent for its multiprotocol network encryption system. The successful Patent, applied for in January 2005 through its wholly-owned subsidiary CTAM USA Inc., was granted by IP Australia (Patent registration: 2005213327) for a period of 20 years from application.

Senetas CEO, John DuBois said: “We are very pleased to have been awarded this comprehensive patent in recognition of Senetas’ innovative engineering culture. The granting of the patent only further reinforces the world-class standing of our high speed network encryption platform, CypherNet.”

He said the platform secured all major network protocols from low speed IPSec and ATM to high speed SONET and 10 Gbps Ethernet. CypherNet is sold directly and through reseller channels in more than 35 countries. The Senetas multiprotocol network encryptor is listed on the Australian Defence Department’s Evaluated Products List – the only EPL-listed encryptor accredited to the two major global standards: Common Criteria (EAL) and the US-recognised FIPS – and is approved for sale to Australia’s Government departments and agencies, as well as allied governments.

Since the Patent application Senetas has invested further in boosting the speed of the encryption platform, as well as developing: a Fibre channel encryptor securing data in motion between Storage Area Networks; the world’s first hybrid quantum encryptor using the laws of quantum physics to enhance the security of communications over optical fibre networks; and CypherStream a new low cost small footprint encryptor capable of running customised algorithms, a requirement of some foreign governments.
