ASX Company News: Leighton To Build New Rail Line in Hong Kong

The MTR Corporation has appointed Leighton Asia (LEI) to deliver two major contracts for the construction of the South Island Line (East) rail project worth a total of approximately A$547 million. One of the contracts is awarded to a joint venture between Leighton Asia and John Holland Pty Limited, which expects revenues of approximately A$101 million from its share. The South Island Line (East) will be a medium-capacity railway covering approximately 7 kilometres from Admiralty Station to South Horizons Station with intermediate stations at Ocean Park, Wong Chuk Hang and Lei Tung. Spanning many different civil engineering disciplines, the contracts require Leighton Asia to construct 2 kilometres of viaduct that will form the above-ground section of the railway, a 115-metre long Aberdeen Channel railway bridge, 1.1 kilometres of tunnels, two elevated stations at Ocean Park and Wong Chuk Hang, two underground stations at Lei Tung and South Horizons and related plant and ventilation buildings. Cut-and-cover construction methods and drilling and blasting will be used for tunnelling works. When completed, the South Island Line (East) will provide fast and reliable railway service for communities in the south of Hong Kong Island and help ease traffic congestion at critical bottlenecks like Aberdeen Tunnel and the central business district. Construction works are scheduled to begin in May 2011, with an expected completion date in 2015.

ASX Company News: Leighton Asia Secures $180 million Hong Kong Road Contract

Leighton Asia (LEI) has secured an A$180 million contract to construct the Central Interchange of the Central to Wan Chai Bypass (CWB). Located in the heart of Hong Kong’s commercial centre, the award continues Leighton Asia’s involvement along the Central Wan Chai waterfront, in addition to the existing contracts for the Central Reclamation Phase III and the associated section of Central Wan Chai Bypass.

The contract comprises of two bridges totalling 305m long, 224m of cut and cover tunnel and a 116m approach ramp as well as the realignment and reconstruction of existing roads and landscaping works. The interchange links the existing elevated highway in the west to the tunnel already under construction on Leighton Asia’s Central Reclamation Phase III contract.

ASX Company News: Leighton Asia Secures $172 million Indonesian Mining Contract

Leighton Asia (LEI) secures a A$172 million contract for the provision of mining services at the Martabe Gold Mine in North Sumatra Province, Indonesia. Martabe Gold Mine is recognized as a world class gold/silver asset; containing a resource base of 6.5Moz gold and 66Moz silver. Located in North Sumatra Province, Indonesia, it is part of G-Resources Group Ltd’s (G-Resources) operations.  PT Leighton Contractors Indonesia, a division of Leighton Asia, has been awarded a contract to undertake the mining activities, including mine haul road construction, topsoil removal, drill and blast, mining of waste and the construction of mine infrastructure. Production will ramp up to 10 Mtpa once at full production and PT Leighton Indonesia has commenced mobilization and the first equipment is due on site in early August 2010.

Leighton Asia Secures $1.1 billlion Indonesian Mining Contract

Leighton Asia (LEI) has been awarded a A$1.1 billion contract for the expansion of the mining services at the MSJ coal mine in Indonesia for PT Mahakam Sumber Jaya (MSJ). The 6 years contract extension will see PT Leighton Contractors Indonesia, a division of Leighton Asia, expand its current overburden removal and coal mining operations to over 8 million tonnes of coal per annum. The mine, which is part of the TANITO Group’s coal operations, is located in the north of Samarinda, East Kalimantan.

MTR Corporation Awarded Rail Contract

The MTR Corporation Limited (MTR Corporation) has awarded Leighton Asia (LEI) a contract worth A$463 million for the construction of the tunnels and ventilation buildings in the Tse Uk Tsuen to Shek Yam section of the Guangzhou – Shenzhen – Hong Kong Express Rail Link (XRL).

The Guangzhou – Shenzhen – Hong Kong Express Rail Link (XRL) is a cross boundary transport infrastructure project, which will provide high speed rail services between Hong Kong and mainland China. The Hong Kong SAR Government has entrusted the design and construction of the Guangzhou – Shenzhen – Hong Kong Express Rail Link Hong Kong Section to the MTR Corporation.

The Hong Kong section of the XRL will be underground for the 26 km from the terminus in West Kowloon to the boundary crossing point at Huanggang, Shenzhen. The awarded Contract 822 includes the construction of a 7.6 km twin-track tunnel between Tse Uk Tsuen and Shek Yam, ventilation and access adits, two ventilation buildings and a 90 m deep ventilation shaft. Drill and blast techniques will be used for the construction of the tunnels. The works will be undertaken in co-operation with Macmahon Holdings.

Leighton To Build New Hong Kong Hospital

Leighton Asia (LEI), in a joint venture with Able Engineering Co Ltd, has secured a A$245 million contract to design and construct phase one of the new Tung Chung Hospital on Lantau Island, Hong Kong. North Lantau is one of the strategic growth areas under planning in Hong Kong. To cater for

the development of Lantau Island (including Tung Chung), the growth of the local population and the fact that Hong Kong International Airport and some other major tourist facilities are situated on Lantau Island, the Government of HKSAR decided to develop an acute hospital in Tung Chung, a new Town in North Lantau Island. The hospital is being developed by the Architectural Services Department of the

Government of HKSAR and the contract works includes the design and construction of the eight storey, 160 bed hospital block together with associated building services and external works. The construction floor area of the building is approximately 43,500 square metres. When completed, phase one of the Tung Chung Hospital will provide 80 beds for in-patient emergency medicine, 80 beds for in-patient extended care, ambulatory care services including 20 day beds for surgeries/procedures, community care services, diagnostic and treatment services, and support services including pharmacy and administrative services. The contract works will commence in January 2010 with completion scheduled for mid 2012.

Leighton Asia Wins $410 million Hong Kong Sewer Contract

Leighton Asia (LEI) in joint venture with Leonhard Nilsen & Sonner AS (LNS) has been awarded a A$410 million contract by the Hong Kong Drainage Services Department for the construction of a sewage conveyance system from Aberdeen to Sai Ying Pun on Hong Kong Island. The project is part of the Hong Kong Government’s Harbour Area Treatment Scheme (HATS) which is a world class sewage collection and treatment infrastructure which will restore Hong Kong’s harbour to a more natural and healthier condition. Works to be undertaken include for the design and construction of 7.5 kilometres of deep sewage tunnels. The tunnels will be constructed using drill and blast techniques with in situ concrete linings at depths ranging from 70 metres to 120 metres. Twin oval sewers with sizes ranging from 1.38 to 1.65 metre equivalent diameter will be installed in the tunnels. Contract works start in August 2009 with scheduled completion in October 2013.

The contract enables us to work with the government in improving environmental standards in Hong Kong.”

Leighton Secures $1.87 Billion Worth of Projects in Asia

A wholly owned subsidiary of Leighton (LEI), Thiess was awarded a US$1.52 billion contract  extension for the operation of the Senakin and Satui Coal Mines in South Kalimantan, Indonesia.  Thiess Managing Director David Saxelby said, “The renewal of the contract is testament to Thiess’ performance and commitment to Indonesia. The additional work provides a tremendous boost to our base workload for the future.”

Thiess will continue its existing scope of work which includes mine planning, overburden removal, coal mining and transportation, plus operation of the coal processing plants and barge loading ports.  Thiess Indonesia President Director Roy Olsen commented that operations on both sites would be ramped up over the coming months to increase production to 12 MT of coal and 120 million cubic meters of overburden per annum.

In addition to this Leighton Asia has secured an A$350 million, six year mining contract for the Ukhaakhudag coal mine project in Mongolia.  Leighton Asia is currently working on site at Ukhaakhudag undertaking the initial mine development works and has established a mining team at the site that will commence the mining contract in March 2009. The contract works includes the removal of overburden and mining of the coal, plus provision of mining planning and engineering services.
