ASX Company News: Electro Optic Systems Secures New Weapons Contract

Thursday, October 11th, 2012

Electro Optic Systems (EOS) has announced a new contract valued at $5.1 million for the manufacture and delivery of remote weapon systems in 2013-2014 for an existing customer.

Announcing the contract, the Chief Executive of EOS’ Defence Systems business, Mr Mark Bornholt, said: “This order is for our most advanced model of remote weapon system to be integrated onto a specialist armoured engineering vehicle. It will be filled in EOS’ production facilities in Australia and the USA. “This product has been in reliable production in a similar configuration now ordered for more than 18 months and no changes to our supply chain or production processes will be required. This order will see integration testing in 2013 and production in 2014.

EOS develops, manufactures and sells sophisticated aerospace technology with a wide range of applications through two business divisions – military and space. EOS’ remote weapon systems enable a weapon to be fired rapidly and accurately by a gunner safely relocated away from the weapon. Typically the technology is applied for mounting weapons on the top of an armoured vehicle, and the gunner inside the vehicle. EOS remote weapon systems have been produced in significant numbers for US Army, NATO forces, Australia, and other countries around the world.

EOS’ space division is as a manufacturer of telescopes and technology to support space surveillance and space debris management, including removal. In space surveillance, EOS’s laser tracking systems and computer technology can track small orbiting debris objects with great precision – while its space ablation technology and systems could potentially allow future de-orbiting of space debris objects.

ASX Company News: Electro Optic Systems Secures $3 million Space Contract

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

Electro Optics Systems Holdings Limited (EOS) has this week been awarded a $3 million Department of Defence Concept Technology Demonstrator (CTD) contract to demonstrate that its electro-optic space surveillance sensors integrate and operate effectively with existing space surveillance sensors. The Defence Concept Technology Demonstrator (CTD) contract, announced today by the Minister for Defence Science and Personnel, Warren Snowdon, will now require those sensors to be tested in real-time operations with existing space surveillance radars, to establish that new sensors can operate effectively within existing tracking infrastructure which represents many billions of dollars of investment.

“This project seeks to show how precision laser tracking systems can co-operate with radar tracking systems to detect and then pin-point space objects. Once the laser has a lock on the object, it can determine the orbit with high precision,” Said Dr Craig Smith, CEO of EOS Space Systems Pty Limited, the EOS subsidiary undertaking the effort. Knowing the precise track of space objects is critical for satellite operators to avoid costly collisions in orbit.”

The CTD Contract announced today will involve the expertise of EOS and its partner Northrop Grumman to examine how EOS’ Australian-based sensors could be linked to US-based radar to track space objects more accurately and effectively than either system could achieve alone.

ASX Company News: Electro Optic Systems Develops First Wireless Remote Weapon

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

Electro Optic Systems Holdings Limited (EOS) has released the first remotely operated weapon system that can be entirely operated and controlled by means of wireless network communications.

Remotely controlled weapon systems have been in development for almost 20 years, and have been used in combat operations for approximately 5 years. The key objectives of these systems have always been the improvement of weapon effectiveness, and the removal of the gunner to a safer position remote from the weapon itself.

A key limitation until now has been the need to locate the weapon system operator relatively close to the deployed weapon, because the weapon controls were connected by cables. Wireless controls have not been possible because of several safety and security issues:

1. A wireless system could be taken over by opposing forces and used against friendly forces unless very secure communications were employed.

2. The absence of a human operator results in deficiencies in the overall situation awareness at the weapon location, giving rise to safety and security concerns.

3. The need for clear identification of friendly forces to prevent fratricide.

4. Unpredictable time delays in very remote control links require certain functions of the weapon application be implemented robotically but without allowing robot control of the weapon itself.

All of these issues have been overcome by EOS, in cooperation with EOS’s partner on remote weapons systems, Northrop Grumman with a generic device architecture that can be rapidly adapted to specific military digital environments.

EOS has obtained patent coverage in the US and other countries, for its implementation of this next generation of remote weapon system. The patents cover rules-based weapon controls to allow reliable and safe weapon operation over limited bandwidth and stressed communication systems.

Commenting at the recent Army USA Annual Meeting and Exposition in Washington DC, EOS’ Chief Executive Officer, Ben Greene, said:  “The new technology we have developed allows weapon systems to be deployed with no physical connection to an operator. This means that for the first time weapon operators can be located as much as 500 to 800 meters away from the weapon. By coupling to existing secure communications, this can be further extended almost indefinitely.”

ASX Company News: Electro Optic Systems Holdings Wins $10 million Weapons Contract

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

Electro Optic Systems Holdings Limited (EOS) has been awarded a new contract for delivery of remote weapon systems. The contract value is approximately $10 million and the systems will be delivered within 6 months.  The order is from an existing customer for EOS remote weapon systems, and specifies the delivery of EOS R-400 products.

Commenting immediately after the award of the contract today, the Chief Executive of EOS, Ben Greene said:  “This award lifts the quantity of unfilled orders for weapon systems above the current annual production capacity of EOS for specific product variants. With ongoing marketing efforts, we expect the existing capacity limits to be inappropriate for future operations.”  “In expectation of achieving this order threshold, the company has planned a simultaneous consolidation and expansion of its production capacity in the US. This plan is now being executed.”

“The Barrington (Illinois) production plant acquired from ROI in November 2009 will be closed immediately and EOS’ production capacity in Tucson (Arizona) will be substantially expanded. The consolidation will result in substantial cost savings for EOS, while the expanded Tucson capacity will meet current and future demands.”   “In particular the upgraded Tucson plant, to be on line by November 2010, will be able to support rapidly-scalable large scale production as required for the US Army CROWS program. The Army requirement for rapid adjustment of both production volume and product technical configuration in response to urgent needs is not readily met by most production capabilities in this industry, word-wide.”

Electro Optic Systems Secures New Weapons Contracts

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Electro Optic Systems Holdings Limited (EOS) has been awarded significant new contracts for delivery of its remote weapon systems in the period since 1 July 2009. The contracts require the delivery of up to 221 units for three existing EOS customers. The delivery schedules span 24 months commencing in early 2010, with 56 units to be delivered by 30 June 2010. If all options are taken up, the contracts are worth around $52m. The contracts are the largest aggregate order received by EOS in its own right for remote weapon systems in any half-year since the initial product was developed by EOS over 10 years ago.

EOS CEO, Dr Ben Greene, said the scope of the orders was especially positive because the orders covered both the EOS R-400 and R-600 products. Another positive was that customers who are actively deploying the products are expressing their satisfaction through repeat orders. “In particular, customers have emphasised the unmatched long-range effectiveness of EOS weapon systems in placing these orders. The orders will require monthly shipment rates to gradually increase to their highest levels since mid-2007 but EOS production is well prepared for this required expansion,” Dr Greene added. In the past 2 years the company has actively engaged with selected new markets for its remote weapon system products. Allowing for acquisition schedules typical in this industry, EOS expects orders from new customers to supplement those from existing customers from 2010.

Electro Optic Systems Acquires Recon Optical

Friday, December 4th, 2009

Electro Optic Systems Holdings Limited (EOS) is pleased to announce that its US subsidiary EOS Defense Systems Inc. has acquired the remote weapon systems business of Recon Optical, Inc. This acquisition consolidates under EOS a technology base and product range unsurpassed in the rapidly-expanding remote weapon systems sector. Remote weapon systems allow ballistic weapons, such as machine guns, to be operated remotely from the weapon, providing a protected environment for the gunner. EOS and ROI developed and deployed to Iraq a lightweight version of CROWS 1 called “CROWS Lightning”. Variants of this product are marketed in international markets as the EOS R-200 remote weapon system.

Direct control of all of the technology and production for all of its products provides EOS with competitive advantages through larger production volume, leading to internal efficiencies and supply chain improvements; flexibility for allocating offsets within export markets to enable local participation in remote weapon system production and support; product improvements in one product which can now be more readily moved to other products; and seamless movement for all customers from one product in the range to another. The acquisition also improves EOS’ ability to provide total support for its entire product range, since EOS is also acquiring the physical ROI depot and spare parts operations for remote weapon systems, including CROWS support operations in Iraq.

The Chief Executive officer of EOS Dr Ben Greene said: “The acquisition of ROI’s remote weapon systems business provides a leap forward to EOS in terms of its product range, price competitiveness, technology base, plant capacity and field support capabilities. The fusion of ROI and EOS technologies will allow EOS to ensure CROWS compatibility throughout its product range, and in particular will position it as a strong competitor for future U.S. Army requirements.”
